Our Story

In 2018, We celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Pet Loss Support Group!
We provide weekly, free, therapist-facilitated, support group for Denver-area pet parents that anticipate or have experienced the loss of a beloved companion animal.  Learn more about our Support Group here.

Where we started:

  • In 1986, Dr. Jan Facinelli organized a Pet Loss Seminar for the Denver area community to bring awareness for pet loss
The response from the Denver-area community was tremendous!  From this seminar, a core group of individuals formed to address issues surrounding pet loss, end-of-life care, and the importance of the Human-Animal Bond.
  • In 1988, the Denver Area Veterinary Medical Society (DAVMS) funded a one year pilot program
The program created a weekly, therapist-facilitated support group to meet the needs of pet parents within the Denver area.  The Pet Loss Support Group was born!

And the work continued....

  • 1991: "The Emotional Impact of Euthanasia of Healthy Animals" Seminar presented to the Denver veterinary community
  • 1992: "The Tragedy of Disposable Animals: Redefining the Issues" focused on the topic of pet overpopulation
  • 1994: "When the Bond Breaks" Seminar focused on the grief process and emotional impact of pet loss
  • 1995: The Human-Animal Bond Trust obtained their 501(c)(3) status as a non-profit charity
  • 1995-2007: The annual "Putting for Pets" golf tournament helped raise funds to support the work of the Trust

Our mission continues today!

It's 30 years later. . . . we continue our mission with the same passion!
We are dedicated to celebrating the uniqueness of the Human Animal Bond and raising awareness of its importance within the community of pet parents and supporting veterinary professionals.
