Why can it hurt so much when a pet dies?
Pets give us companionship and unconditional love.
Our relationships with our animal companions are very special and unique. For many of us, our companion animal is a member of the family and when the bond we share is broken, the resulting sense of loss and grief is as real and sometimes as overwhelming as when we lose a relative or human friend.

Whether an animal dies, is lost, stolen, or must be placed in a new home, sorrow is a normal and natural reaction to the loss of a beloved friend.
Our culture doesn’t always provide us with the rituals to help mourn the loss of a companion animal as it does the loss of a human. Even your best friends and relatives may not acknowledge or understand the depth of feeling you have for a lost pet. |
The first step in coping with your grief is to acknowledge your feelings.
Grieving the loss of a friend or companion is a sign of the love that existed between you.

Our goal is to provide support to any pet parent that anticipates or has experienced the loss of a beloved companion animal. You are not alone...come experience the support of others who are going through a similar experience.
The Pet Loss Support Group is a safe and supportive environment where individuals can come to process the grief occurring from the loss or anticipated loss of a beloved animal companion. This weekly group is facilitated by compassionate, licensed therapists and has been available, free-of-charge, to the Denver area since 1988, thanks to the 501(c)3 non-profit The Human-Animal Bond Trust. We run entirely on donations- thank you for your generosity!
View our Resource Library for more information on pet loss and the grieving process. Our brochure also has lots of good information on what you may experience after your loss.
Remember: "Sorrow is not forever; love is"
